FAQs

The questions that come up on the phone.

Answered the way Matt or Phil would answer them on the phone — including the awkward ones about registrations and how a job gets priced.

Are you Gas Safe registered?
Gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, and the firm publishes registration number 591545 on its certification page. Whoever you use, do the same check: every Gas Safe registered engineer carries an ID card with their photograph, the appliances they are qualified for and an expiry date, and you can look any registration up on the Gas Safe Register website. Ask at the door before gas work begins.
Who will actually turn up?
Matt or Phil Camp, the two active directors, or an engineer working with them. The reviews on the Google profile name Matt and Phil by name, which is the most useful thing a small firm's reviews can tell you: the people who own it are the people doing the work.
How much does a job cost?
Nothing is sold off a price list, because a boiler service on a well-kept combi and a boiler service on a neglected twenty-year-old system are not the same piece of work. Describe the job on the phone or send photos, and you get a price for your house before anything is booked. Leak detection is the exception with its own rule: find it or there is nothing to pay.
What does powerflushing actually do?
It clears the sludge — corrosion debris that collects in radiators and pipework — out of a heating system under pressure with a pump and a chemical clean. The symptoms are radiators cold at the bottom or cold at one end of the house, a boiler that is noisy or keeps cutting out, and bills that have crept up. There is a full explanation on the powerflushing page, including how to tell when a flush is the answer and when it is not.
Can you find a leak without pulling the floor up?
That is the point of leak detection as a separate service. Tracing the water first — with the right equipment and a methodical process — means one small area of floor or wall comes up rather than a room's worth of guesswork. And if the leak is not found, there is nothing to pay.
I'm a landlord. Can you do the gas safety certificate?
Yes — landlord gas safety certificates are part of the boiler servicing side of the business. A certificate is required every twelve months for rented property in England, it covers every gas appliance and flue in the property, and the tenant has to be given a copy. There is a plain-English page on this site explaining what the check involves and what happens if something fails.
Do you do commercial work as well as houses?
Yes. Commercial installations and commercial kitchens are both part of what the firm does, alongside the domestic work. Catering plumbing has its own rules — gas interlocks, ventilation, grease and drainage — and it is not the same job as a family bathroom.
Do you fit bathrooms, or only the plumbing?
Bathroom and wet room refurbishment is one of the services, and kitchen refurbishment work is taken on too. The plumbing side — pressure, waste runs, the position of the soil pipe — is what decides whether a bathroom layout will work at all, which is a better reason to start with a plumber than with a tile shop.
What are your hours?
Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, closed at weekends, per the firm's Google business profile. Matt and Phil are on the tools during the day, so calls are often returned between jobs — an email with photos to info@guildford-plumbing.com gets looked at the same way.
What should I do if I can smell gas?
Do not ring a plumber first. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away, turn the gas off at the meter if you can safely reach it, open windows, leave electrical switches alone and get everyone out of the building. Ring Guildford Plumbing and Heating afterwards to put right whatever caused it.
